Increasing Digital Economy Participation for ASEAN Women MSMEs (IDEAS Project)

Empowering Lao Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital Era

EDC’s Successful Implementation of the IDEAS Project in Lao PDR

Enhancing Digital Economy Participation for ASEAN Women MSMEs (IDEAS Project)

The Enterprise & Development Consultants Co., Ltd (EDC) proudly serves as the implementing institution for the IDEAS Project in Lao PDR, a regional initiative titled “Increasing Digital Economy Participation for ASEAN Women MSMEs (IDEAS Project)”.
This project is spearheaded by the Asia Pacific Women’s Information Network Center (APWINC) under the UNESCO Chair, and supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) of the Republic of Korea.

The IDEAS Project aims to strengthen the digital and e-business capabilities of women entrepreneurs across ASEAN, enabling them to expand their participation in the growing digital economy.

Building Digital Competencies for Lao Women MSMEs

Since its launch, EDC has been committed to supporting women-led micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Laos to transition from traditional business models to digital-first operations.

Between April 2024 and July 2025, EDC successfully conducted 12 batches of local training nationwide. Each batch consisted of 10–38 female entrepreneurs, totaling 242 participants from diverse sectors such as food production, education, handicrafts, natural products, and e-commerce.

The IDEAS training program combined face-to-face and hybrid methods, covering two main components:

– E-Business: Women’s Empowerment in the Digital Economy, Business Model Innovation, Target Market Development, and Business Expansion.

– Digital Skills: Digital Marketing, E-Commerce Concepts, Digital Content Creation, Privacy & Cybersecurity, and Applied Computer Skills.

Survey results show exceptionally high participant satisfaction, with an average rating of 4.5–4.7 out of 5 across all evaluation categories — including program management, content relevance, and lecturer proficiency.

Beyond the Classroom: Mentoring for Real Change

In addition to the structured training, EDC implemented a comprehensive mentoring program designed to help women apply their new skills in real business contexts.

Over 270 mentoring sessions were conducted in one-on-one and small-group formats, covering both general and participant-specific topics such as:

– E-commerce operations and regulations

– Accounting and access to finance

– Digital marketing and content creation

– Branding and packaging design

More than 242 women entrepreneurs benefited directly from mentoring, enabling them to improve their online visibility, strengthen digital marketing strategies, and boost their business performance.

Connecting Women Entrepreneurs with the Digital Ecosystem

Throughout implementation, EDC worked closely with local e-commerce platforms (OneX and Made in Laos), ICT departments, and business associations to expand access to online markets and resources.
Participants were encouraged to register their businesses on digital platforms, including the IDEAS E-Store, to promote “Made in Laos” products and connect with ASEAN markets.

EDC’s facilitation fostered not only technical capacity building, but also peer-to-peer networks, business collaboration, and confidence among women entrepreneurs to embrace digital innovation.

Key Achievements and Reflections

Over two years of IDEAS implementation, EDC has achieved the following milestones:

By fostering collaboration among stakeholders and leveraging its expertise in training and consulting, EDC continues to support women-led MSMEs to thrive in the evolving digital landscape.
